Is is worth becoming a progammer in the US? Are the jobs still being outsourced to distant lands? It doesn't seem like programming pays that well anymore, is there a particular job in programming that pays better (design vs coding, etc)?

That's my concern, I'm considering a jump in career but want to make sure I'm not jumping onto a sinking ship.

So (at least in Chicago) the ship may or may not be sinking but it definitely isn't taking new crewmembers. Neutral

I also have no interest in reducing my income so tightened purse strings also would scare me.

Well, let's be fair for a moment. There are a lot of jobs out there. I have a rather unique skillset though, and people don't want me. That's not to say they wouldn't want you. I also have a different outlook because I have an ultimate goal of getting my piece of software off the ground, and feel that the only way to make good money with programming would be to do it on my own.

That's my dream though, and it probably plays into things. The jobs are out there. My background doesn't support a ton of programming, and they have no way of knowing what I do know about it. Those who want database administrators want people with experience with larger datasets than I have used. Going back to a networking resume might be my best fit.

I'm like you though, I don't want an internship type position, and people don't want to hire me for it either. They know I wouldn't be there long. I'm just biased though because I'm in favor of the future being in programming for myself and not for other people.
