as long as the web server supports asp then your site should work. just upload and give it a run through. i am currently doing a web site in php and things work on my computer and then i upload it to a server that runs linux and somtimes things go very wrong.
there are a number of things to consider when looking for a web host: how much it will cost/how much you are willing to spend what OS are they running what scripting languages do they support/allow how much storage do they give how much bandwidth do they give what extra features do they have how much is it to upgrades things is needed
it also comes down to what you need. there are a lot of things out there that you may never even use. so it doesn't matter whether they have them or not.
what are your plans for this site? Programmer's Corner - .NET, Web Development, SQL, C++, and more. |

by tool do you mean scripting language? it all depends on what you know and whether you are willing to learn. i think php is the fastest, asp has it's advantages if you already know vb6, and java servlets/jsp have their advantages too (although one of them is definitely not speed). Others will know a lot more than me about the scripting, so I'll let them help you with that.
As far as the discussion forum goes, if you want to host it yourself, and your site supports PHP and MySQL, I hear phpbb is about the best thing going. I have seen a lot of sites using it, and they all seem to run pretty fast. From what I have heard, the install is quite simple too.
I chose to let ezBoard host this one though. I like the global login factor. It makes it easy for others to show up and use the board. I also like the fact that the traffic for the board is kept seperate from the traffic for the regular site. It makes it simpler to keep track of. Finally, the fact that maintenance is taken care of by ezBoard helps out.
On the negative side, it leaves the board at ezBoard's mercy. If there is a lot of traffic on another board on the same server, it can run incredibly slow at times.
Just some thoughts. Programmer's Corner - .NET, Web Development, SQL, C++, and more. Visual Basic Explorer - For all your Visual Basic 6 needs! |
