|
|
So, I'm thinking about trying some things in .NET. Actually I already started trying some things in .NET. Right now I'm using SharpDevelop for it. Seems pretty decent, but I can't help but think maybe I'm missing out by not going the Visual Studio route.
Anyone else out there use both extensively enough to have some pros and cons, or is anyone who uses one willing to share some of the cons about the one they use?

Are you planning on doing VB.Net or C#?
#Develop doesn't have the best VB.net support. It works much better with C#.
Personally, I like VS simply because I am more familiar with the interface and shortcuts. I also find it to be quicker... the intelli-sense and real-time error listing and such. But I also do mostly VB.net, and I find the limitations of #Develop to be too much.
NOTE: I haven't worked with #Develop since Beta 1, so things may have changed. |

VB support has changed drastically since Beta 1.
Well, I've been using SharpDevelop for a week now and have had some pretty good luck with it. Sometimes I'm lost as to how to get around in the IDE, but I seem to find my way out eventually. Someday I'll be able to afford Visual Studio. Of course, when I can afford it, there won't be any need to work anymore. |

You could go with the Express Editions. They work great if your only doing one language.
Supposedly the Beta for .Net 2.0 is stable enough to write production apps on, but I think I would wait for the official release, unless this is going to a small group of targets. |
